Deputy Governor Nguyen Kim Anh of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Amol Gupte, Citi Country Officer (CCO) for Singapore and Head of ASEAN, in Hanoi on October 28.
At the meeting, the Deputy Governor warmly welcomed Mr. Gupte’s working visit to Vietnam. He said that the SBV supported and greatly appreciated Citibank’s assistance in researching into improving the process of checking payment dossiers for goods import through connecting with the General Department of Vietnam Customs. He added that, in the near-future, the SBV hoped Citibank Vietnam would continue to complete and improve the program on connecting with the electronic custom portal, and implementing effectively the utilization of electronic dossiers in payment for goods import, thereby contributing to a cost reduction for enterprises and socio-economic development. He added that the SBV has been formulating a scheme for cashless payments in Vietnam for the 2016 – 2020 period, and that the scheme would be submitted to the Government for issuance in 2016, of which electronic payment is one of key components for boosting non-cash payments.
For his part, Mr. Gupte offered his views on opportunities for supporting the SBV’s plans for modernising the payment system and the enhancement of electronic payment as set out by the Government and the SBV in the banking development strategy over the next few years. He emphasized that the extension of a payment system and inclusive finance programs have been implemented successfully by a number of countries in Europe and Asia. He said that Citibank Vietnam is willing to share with the SBV it's experience in this field. He also reflected on the SBV’s Scheme for cashless payments in Vietnam during 2016 – 2020 and made his recommendations related to the payment field.
