Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Kshatrapati Shivaji, Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan on August 28, 2017 at the SBV headquarters.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Eric Sidgwick, ADB Country Director for Vietnam and representatives of the International Cooperation Department of the SBV.
At the meeting, Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong welcomed Mr. Kshatrapati Shivaji’s work-trip to Vietnam, briefing him several recent macro-economy developments of Vietnam, the performance of monetary policy management and banking operations as well as the up-coming orientations of the SBV.
The Deputy Governor highly appreciated ADB Board of Directors for having approved the funding programs and projects for Vietnam. The Deputy Governor affirmed these support had positive impacts on the socio-economic development of Vietnam, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the Socio-economic development Plans (SEPs) and poverty reduction.
Mr. Kshatrapati Shivaji, ADB Executive Director for Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, stated that during his two working days in Vietnam, he was impressed by the rapid development of economic infrastructure of Vietnam. He visited two ADB-funded projects and found that Vietnam is growing very rapidly, especially in manufacturing and services. Mr. Kshatrapati Shivaji affirmed that ADB commits to support Vietnam in the cause of economic development and wishes to enhance further cooperation with Vietnam in general and the SBV in particular, and become a reliable and long-term partner of Vietnam in the coming time.
Showing appreciation for the highly positive assessment of the ADB Executive Director regarding Vietnam’s economy, Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong expressed her hope that ADB would improve its role and position in the region, continue to cooperate and support Vietnam in general and the SBV in particular. Especially, Vietnam will be scheduled to graduate from ADF since January 1, 2019, therefore, the Deputy Governor suggested ADB Executive Director to have appropriate mechanisms to help Vietnam to to have continuous resources to carry out its economic restructuring and to address challenges in sustainable poverty reduction, uneven development and climate change.
