On February 26, 2019, Governor Le Minh Hung and Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with a high-level delegation of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) comprised of Mr. Hermann Greve, Head of Secretariat Division of the BIS Board of Directors; Mr. Siddharth Tiwari, Member of the BIS Board of CEOs cum Chief Representative for Asia Pacific; Mr. Thomas Liu, Deputy Head of Treasury Department for Asia and the Pacific of the BIS.
Recently, under the authorization of the BIS Board of Directors, Mr. Agustín Carstens, BIS General Manager, has sent a letter to invite the SBV to become a member of the BIS. Therefore, at this meeting, the BIS delegation provided the SBV Management Board with information on the establishment and development of the BIS, as well as its mission, organizational structure, other matters and contents related to the BIS membership. The BIS officers also answered questions from the SBV related to the BIS operations and its membership.
At the meeting, Governor Le Minh Hung and Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong highly appreciated the BIS’s invitation for the SBV to join the BIS as a member, and affirmed the expectations of the SBV to enhance the cooperation with the BIS in various fields. Becoming a member of the BIS will help the SBV and the Vietnamese banking sector to access the highest principles and standards of the global financial system, contributing to accelerating the international integration of the finance and banking system, and enhancing the capabilities and competitiveness of Vietnam’s financial system, as well as the economy as a whole.
