According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) in May 2021 increased by 0.16% against that of April 2021; up by 1.43% as compared to that of December 2020 and up by 2.9% in comparison with the same time of 2020; the average CPI for the first five months of 2021 was up by 1.29% as compared to that of the same period last year.
Specifically, the prices of eight out of eleven groups of commodities increased, in which the group of traffic registered the highest increase of 0.76%; the group of housing and construction materials rose by 0.4%; the group of household appliances and goods and the group of beverage and cigarette increased by 0.09%; the group of other commodities and services rose by 0.06%; the group of food and catering services rose by 0.04%; the group of education was up by 0.03%; the group of medicine and healthcare was up by 0.01%.
The group of culture, entertainment and tourism registered the highest decrease of 0.23%; the group of postal services & telecommunication was down by 0.15%; the group of footwear and hat went down by 0.01%.
The core inflation increased by 0.15% in May 2021 as compared with that of the previous month, and increased by 1.13% over the same time of 2020. The average core inflation for five months of 2021 was up by 0.82% as compared with that of the same period of 2020, lower than the average CPI (up by 1.29%). The core inflation in May and the average core inflation for five months of 2021 both registered the lowest increases during the last five years.
