On October 14, 2024, at the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), Governor Nguyen Thi Hong had a meeting with Mr. Ge Haijiao, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of China (BOC).

Governor Nguyen Thi Hong spoke highly of the BOC’s financial capacity and advantages as the first Chinese bank to establish its presence in Vietnam, with 30 years of operations to date. The SBV Governor also complimented the BOC's positive business results, particularly its consistent compliance to the regulations on the safety of the banking operations. Governor Hong went on to encourage the BOC to continue collaborating and sharing its experience with Vietnamese partners, especially in accelerating the digital transformation in the banking sector, in line with the Government of Vietnam's efforts to develop a digital economy and a digital society.
With the policy and strategic orientations of the Government of Vietnam prioritising the investments into the transportation and energy infrastructure toward sustainability, the SBV Governor expressed her hope that Chinese banks in general, and the BOC in particular, would engage more proactively in providing the necessary financial resources to support Vietnam in implementing infrastructure projects and investments in these sectors.

Sharing information about the outcomes of the talk between the Prime Minister of Vietnam and the Premier of the State Council of China, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong affirmed that the SBV always creates favorable conditions for all foreign banks, including the BOC, to operate safely, efficiently, and equitably in the Vietnamese market, in accordance with the applicable laws on monetary and banking operations.
Regarding the potentials for the cross-border retail payment connections using QR codes, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong expressed her hope that Chinese banks would continue to collaborate with Vietnamese commercial banks and switching companies to study and assess the possibilities for cooperation in this area, with the goal of providing convenient and secure services, promoting tourism, and encouraging the exchanges between the people of the two countries.
