On September 17, 2024, at the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha had a meeting with Mr. Alderman Michael Mainelli, Lord Mayor of the City of London.

At the meeting, Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha thanked Mr. Michael Mainelli for the UK’s valuable assistance extended to the Government and the people of Vietnam in the disaster relief efforts after super typhoon Yagi. The SBV Deputy Governor also spoke highly of the comprehensive cooperative relations between the two countries in the finance and banking sector.

Within the framework of the meeting, the two sides exchanged their views and orientations in the implementation of the Plan for the establishment of Vietnam International Financial Center in Ho Chi Minh City. They also discussed and shared some experience in green finance and digital banking in Vietnam.

For his part, Mr. Alderman Michael Mainelli highly complimented the achievements that the Government of Vietnam in general and the SBV in particular had obtained in the formulation and implementation of the policies on green credit, the management of climate and environmental risks in the banking operations. Besides, the Lord Mayor also affirmed that the UK is always willing to support and share its experience with Vietnam in developing green banking and the digital transformation in association with the enhancement of AI applications in finance and banking in Vietnam, as well as how to manage AI to overcome the barriers to trade in the coming time.
Discussing the orientations for the cooperation in the coming time, the SBV would like the City of London to continue accompanying and supporting Vietnam in enhancing the digitization of the finance and banking sector, focusing on accelerating the digital banking in order to for promote financial inclusion.
