Deputy Governor Nguyen Phuoc Thanh of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Jeff Nankivell, Director General Programming (Asia – Pacific) of Global Affairs Canada, in Hanoi on November 26.
At the meeting, Deputy Governor Nguyen Phuoc Thanh warmly welcomed Mr. Jeff Nankivell and working delegation to the SBV. He asserted that Canada is an important sponsor for Vietnam’s banking sector with several bilateral projects such as Project on restructuring the banking sector (2005-2010 period), the Banking Regulation and Supervision Support (BRASS) project and co-funded projects (PRSC, EMCC2). Up to now, those projects have been effectively implemented, thereby contributing to helping Vietnam obtain socio-economic objectives.
In regard to BRASS project, Deputy Governor Nguyen Phuoc Thanh said that it is the SBV’s key project in the field of banking supervision and inspection. He highly appreciated the activeness and the flexibility of the Global Affairs Canada in changing the supporting method and human resource to meet the demand of the SBV more effectively.
Moreover, the SBV Deputy Governor briefed the guest of macro-economic situations in Vietnam over the past time and the process of restructuring the banking sector. He stated that Vietnam’s banking sector hopes to receive support and experience as well as financial resources from economic stakeholders and investors, including experience and support from Canadian Government.
For his part, Mr. Jeff Nankivell expressed his pleasure at long-term relation between Vietnam and Canada, and spoke highly of encouraging results that Vietnam obtained in implementing measures of stabilizing macro-economy, curbing inflation and ensuring social protection. About the implementation of the BRASS project, Mr. Jeff Nankivell committed to effectively support and accompany with the SBV in the process of development and modernization.
