On May 11, 2023, in Hanoi, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) organized a press conference announcing the event of Digital transformation of the banking sector in 2023. This press conference was chaired by the Editor-in-Chief of the Banking Times, the Director General of the Payment Department, and the Deputy Director General of the Information Technology Department of the SBV.
Placing the people as the center; the users’ utilities and convenience as measurers for the performance of digital transformation
At the press conference, Mrs. Hoang Thanh Nhan, Editor-in-Chief of the Banking Times, informed that, following the guidance of the Government, the Prime Minister, and Decision No. 810/QD-NHNN of the SBV on the Plan for Digital Transformation in the banking sector by 2025, vision to 2030, over the past time, the banking sector has implemented many solutions, proactively applied digital technologies to the banking operations, developed digital banking models, created a digital ecosystem, provided safe, convenient and quality products and services in order to enhance the customer experience, therefore making an important contribution to promoting a digital economy and a digital society.

Sharing at the press conference, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Director General of the SBV Payment Department, emphasized that, placing the people as the center, the utilities and convenience of services provided by the banks to their users as measurers for the performance of digital transformation, after 2 years implementing Decision No. 810, the entire banking sector has achieved encouraging results in digital transformation. A lot of modern banking products and services have been developed and are accessible to the people. The types of services provided in the digital environment have become more diversified and convenient. The SBV, the domestic and foreign credit institutions have achieved lots of successes in many aspects.

In 2023, the focus will be on connecting and exploiting the national population database
Mrs. Hoang Thanh Nhan added that, in this year’s Banking Sector Digital Transformation Day, the SBV Governor has selected the theme of “Application of population data in banking operations - momentum for digital transformation”. This reflects the determination of the banking sector in continuing to effectively implement the tasks as stated at the Scheme on the development of the applications of the population data, the personal identification and e-KYC for the national digital transformation in the 2022 - 2025 period, vision to 2030 issued as attachment to Decision No. 06/QD-TTg dated January 06, 2022 of the Prime Minister (Scheme 06); as well as Coordination Plan No. 01/KHPH-BCA-NHNN. In those documents, the focus has been put on connecting and exploiting the national database on population to validate the customers’ data and support the banking industry's professional operations. Over the past time, the banking sector has been one of the pioneers in implementing Scheme 06.
In addition, according to Mr. Doan Thanh Hai, Deputy Director General of the SBV Information Technology Department, the SBV has actively collaborated with the relevant ministries and agencies, especially the Ministry of Public Security (as the lead agency). On the side of the credit institutions, several banks such as VCB, BIDV, Vietinbank, etc. had collaborated with the Police Department for Administrative Management of Social Order (C06) of the Ministry of Public Security to complete a pilot implementation of authentication via chip-based citizen identification cards for a number of banking operations.
* The Digital transformation of the banking sector in 2023 will be held on May 18, 2023 at JW Marriott Hanoi Hotel, and will comprise of the following events: a Symposium on “Application of population data in the banking operations - momentum for digital transformation”; an exhibition which displays simulations of outstanding and typical products and services in digital transformation of the banks and several payment intermediaries; with a fully 3D designed stage and display booths, giving visitors an overview of the digital transformation achievements of the banking sector.
This will also be the first time the SBV awards the Certificates of Merit to recognize organizations and individuals who have made active and important contributions to the digital transformation of the banking sector.
