The Banking Agency of Inspection and Supervision of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) joined the University of Economics and Bussiness – Vietnam National University, Hanoi in organizing the third annual conference on Corporate Governance in Banks, focusing on “Effective Banking Governance” on January 11, 2017 in Hanoi.
The conference was attended by domestic and international scholars, managers, leaders, experts, policy makers in banking and finance sector.
The “Restructuring Credit Institutions” in period 2016 - 2020 as regulated by the Decision No.254/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister has been achieved positive movements. One of the key tasks of the Scheme ““Restructuring Credit Institutions” in period 2016 – 2020 is focusing on improving the management capacity of commercial banks, enhancing banking supervision effectiveness according to Basel II, matching with international standards.
Banking Governance plays an essential role in commercial banks due to the characteristic of high risk and wide affection of its operations. The fact of banking management in Vietnam has shown a number of disadvantages as: (i) Insufficient legal framework for management operation and supervision for banking system; (ii) Model of organization and management of commercial banks reflects certain issues making banking management activities inefficiently; (iii) The enhancement activities of the internal management of commercial banks are coping with many difficulties, such as the formulation of supportive information system, the relation between the relating agencies…
At the meeting, participants concentrated on the main substances as followed: Assessment on effective level in banking governance following the international practices through analyzing the structure of Board of Directors of Commercial banks of Vietnam and several ASEAN countries; Considering the issues relating to supervising banking activities, specifically meeting the requirements on transparency and information announcement, and transaction among related parties of Vietnamese commercial banks; Analyzing challenges and proposing solutions to improving the efficiency of banking supervision of management authorities in line with international standards.
The participants of the conference also had assessed the effect in management of Vietnam banks in line with international practices, thereby proposing appropriate solutions to strengthen governance for Vietnamese commercial banks as well as banking system supervision competency of management authorities.
In addition, the conference introduced the application of researching products, creating an academic forum among scientists, banking managers, policy makers and banking-financial experts.
