According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.53% in May against the previous month, increased by 0.37% as compared to that of December, 2016.
CPI increased in May 2017 by 3.19% in comparison with that of May 2016, while the CPI on average of the first five month of 2017 was up by 4.47% as compared to that of same period of last year.
The price of seven groups of commodities and services out of eleven groups increased insignificantly in comparison with the previous month. Specifically, the price of the group of other commodities and services increased 0.15%, the price of groups of culture, entertainment and tourism; family equipment and appliances; beverage and cigarette; garments, textiles, hats and footwear; medicine and health services; and education increased by 0.13%, 0.1%, 0.08%, 0.05%, 0.04% and 0.02% respectively.
In contrast, the price of four groups of commodities decreased, of which the price of the groups of food and catering services registered the highest decrease by 1.43%; the price of groups of transport; postal services and housing and construction materials were down by 0.34%, 0.05% and 0.02% respectively.
CPI of May 2017 was the lowest increase within 10 recent years. On average of the first five months, the core inflation was 1.56%, lower than the set plan of around 1.6% - 1.8%, indicating that the monetary policy is operated stably.
Apart from this, both the price of gold and USD against VND decreased by 0.1% and 0.03% respectively as compared to that of April 2017
