According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.55% in May 2018 against April 2018, and increased by 1.61% as compared to that of December, 2017.
Specifically, the prices of nine out of eleven groups of commodities increased as compared to the previous month. The price index of the group of traffic registered the highest increase of 1.72%; followed by the group of the food and catering services increased by 0.88% (of which, the price of foodstuff increased by 1.2% due to the increase of the pork price (5.85%). The price of group of housing and construction materials increased by 0.34%; the group of household appliances and goods increased by 0.1%; the prices of group of the beverage and cigarette; the culture, entertainment and tourism; and the garment, footwear and hat were up 0.08% while the price of the group of medicine and healthcare services went up by 0.03% and the price of group of other commodities and services was lightly up by 0.02%.
The price of the education group unchanged while that of postal services and telecommunication decreased by 0.14%.
The core inflation in May, 2018 increased by 0.11% as compared to that of the previous month, and increased by 1.37% over the same period of 2017. The average core inflation in the first five months of 2018 was up by 1.34% as compared to that of the same period of 2017.
The gold price in May, 2018 was down by 0.75% as compared to that of previous month and up by 2.89% in comparison with December 2017 and by 4.72% as compared to that of the same period of 2017. The USD in May, 2018 depreciated by 0.06% as compared to that of the previous month, and appreciated by 0.26% in comparison with that of December 2017 and increase by 0.26% as compared to that of the same period of 2017.
