According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.28% in August 2019 against July 2019, and rose by 1.87% as compared to that of December 2018, and by 2.26% in comparison with that of the same time last year.
Specifically, the prices of eight out of eleven groups of commodities increased as compared to the previous month. The price index of the group of medicine and healthcare registered the highest increase of 2.81%, followed by the price of the education group, which increased by 0.57%; the group of housing and construction materials went up by 0.33%; the group of food and catering services rose by 0.24%; the group of other commodities and services was up by 0.14%; the garment, footwear and hat group increased by 0.09%; the group of household appliances and goods increased by 0.05%.
The group of beverage and cigarette registered the lowest increase of 0.03%.The price index of the group of traffic, the group of the culture, entertainment and tourism, the group of housing, and the group of postal services & telecommunication went down by 0.46%, 0.06%, and 0.05% respectively.
The core inflation in August 2019 increased by 0.13% as compared to that of the previous month, and increased by 1.95% over the same time of 2018. The average core inflation in the first eight months of 2019 was up by 1.9% as compared to that of the same period of 2018.Not included in the commodities and services accounted for in the CPI, the domestic gold price index in August 2019 was up by 4.61% as compared to that of July 2019, while the USD in August 2019 depreciated by 0.17% against the VND as compared to its value in the previous month.
