On April 15, 2022, at the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), Governor Nguyen Thi Hong had a meeting with Ms. Rosemary Lim, IMF Executive Director for the Southeast Asia Voting Group (SEAVG).
At the meeting, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong highly appreciated the support from the IMF Executive Director for the SEAVG and the SEAVG Office. She hoped that the cooperative relationship between the two sides would further develop in the future.
An overview of the meeting
As a member of the IMF's Executive Board, the IMF Executive Director for the SEAVG stated that the IMF made high evaluation for Vietnam’s encouraging achievements in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fast and widespread implementation of the vaccination campaign, and the economic recovery. Besides, she also briefed the SBV Governor of some of the IMF’s agendas, including the IMF’s key policies and initiatives in the recent months. In addition, Ms. Rosemary Lim also shared the IMF’s assessments and forecast of the economic situations around the world as well as in Asia for 2022 and 2023.
For her part, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong mentioned that the SBV in particular and the Government of Vietnam in general highly appreciated the successful implementation of a series of the IMF’s initiatives, such as the SDR allocation in October 2021, the establishment of the Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST), thereby helping to strengthen the member countries’ positions in the external relations, building the confidence, promoting the resilience and the stability of the member countries, and contributing to the global economic recovery. The SBV Governor also agreed with the IMF's global agendas for the future, since they coincide with the objectives of the Government of Vietnam. She further stated that, in light of the current trend of tightening the monetary policy around the world, the SBV would still be consistent with its objectives of controlling the inflation, contributing to maintaining the macro-economic stability, creating favorable conditions for the macro-economic recovery.
In addition, the SBV Governor also expressed high appreciation of the role of Ms. Rosemary Lim and the SEAVG Office in supporting Vietnam in receiving the IMF’s technical assistance programs, as well as in assisting the SBV’s staff in the process of exchanging and updating the IMF’s policies and outlooks with other member countries.
Toward the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue the close coordination in order to further exchange and update information, recommend practical and useful activities to support the development of Vietnam, and to strengthen the role of the SEAVG Office in the future.
