On February 9, in Hanoi, Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Amol Gupte, Head of South Asia & ASEAN of Citi Group.
An overview of the Meeting
At the meeting, Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha warmly welcomed the working visit of Mr. Amol Gupte and other representatives from Citibank Vietnam to the SBV. The SBV Deputy Governor congratulated Mr. Amol Gupte on his new appointment, and expressed his thanks for Mr. Amol Gupte’s past support and contributions as Chair of the Financial Services Committee of the US-ASEAN Business Council.
Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha shared that, 2022 was a year full of challenges to the global economy. Vietnam’s economy had made strong recovery, but it is still facing many difficulties, and the banking sector is no exception. In that context, the SBV had managed the monetary policy in an proactive and flexible manner in line with the practical situations, contributing to controlling the inflation, maintaining the macro-economic stability, supporting the socio-economic recovery and development, ensuring safe and sound banking operations.

Exchanging about the topic of green finance, green growth and green credit, the SBV Deputy Governor expressed his hope that Citi Group would continue to allocate more capital to invest in projects in the fields which are beneficial to the environment, climate change responses, and diversify the areas of support. Expressing his high assessment for the digital transformation at Citibank, the SBV Deputy Governor hoped that Citi Group would enhance its experience sharing in this area, especially related to the management and supervision of the digital transformation process.

For his part, Mr. Amol Gupte, Head of South Asia & ASEAN at Citi Group, spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements as well as the SBV’s monetary policy management over the past years. Mr. Amol Gupte asserted that Citi Group is always willing to share its experience in the mutually-interested areas of both sides.
Also at the meeting, the two sides exchanged their views about several other topics such as the central bank digital currencies (CBDC), e-commerce payment systems, forex management, etc.
