On September 13, 2023, at the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), Governor Nguyen Thi Hong had a meeting with Mr. Thomas Gass, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to Vietnam.

At the meeting, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong spoke highly of the cooperation and assistance resources from the Government of Switzerland to Vietnam during the past 30 years. The SBV Governor emphasized that the Government of Switzerland has supported Vietnam through multiple programs and technical assistance projects to Vietnam’s banking sector and the SBV in particular in the key areas, such as the improvement of the legal frameworks; the banking inspection and supervision; the non-performing loan (NPL) resolution; the enhancement of the banking staff’s capacity for anti-money laundering; fintech development; etc. Those programs and projects supported by Switzerland have all brought practical and effective results.
Governor Nguyen Thi Hong expressed her hope that, in the coming time, the Government of Switzerland would continue to provide its assistance to Vietnam in general and to Vietnam’s banking sector in particular, focusing on a number of key areas, such as the capacity building for the monetary policy management and policy-making; the improvement of the legal frameworks and institutions; strengthening the capacity in the field of banking supervision and inspection; the restructuring of the credit institutions; the digital transformation in the banking sector; the development of green banking and green credit; etc.
An overview of the meeting
For his part, Mr. Thomas Gass made high evaluation for the close and effective cooperation of Vietnam as well as the good leadership of the SBV in the implementation of the programs and projects funded by Switzerland in the banking sector over the past years. The Swiss Ambassador also informed that the Government of Switzerland is currently in the process of developing the technical assistance program framework for the 2025-2028 period, and Vietnam is selected as one of the priority countries in this program.

Toward the end of the meeting, the SBV Governor thanked the Swiss Ambassador for his intensive interest in the cooperation with Vietnam and the banking sector. On this occasion, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong wished the Ambassador a successful term in office, contributing to the further promotion of the friendly bilateral partnership between Vietnam and Switzerland in the future.
