On October 23, 2024 (local time), on the occasion of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) held on October 23-25, 2024 in Washington D.C., the U.S.A., Governor Nguyen Thi Hong of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) attended the Joint Meeting of the Southeast Asia Voting Group (SEAVG) at the IMF/WBG, and had working sessions with the Executive Directors for SEAVG at the IMF and the WBG.
Attending the Joint Session, the leaders from the central banks of the 11 countries in the ASEAN region discussed about the economic developments over the past, and the outlooks of the countries in this region. The delegates also received updates about the operational situations and the future orientations of the IMF and the WBG. In her speech at the Session, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong acknowledged and highly complimented the achievements that the IMF and the WBG had obtained over the past time.

In the working session with the Executive Director for SEAVG at the IMF, the SBV Governor expressed her support for the IMF’s initiatives to strengthen the governance capacity and to provide financial support to the member countries. Governor Hong also called for the cooperation from SEAVG in developing an appropriate approach for the restructuring process of the IMF’s equity capital in the coming time. Regarding the statistics and data for the IMF’s supervision activities, the SBV Governor once again emphasized that the IMF should have flexible approaches in accordance with the specific conditions and situation of each member country.

In the working session with the Executive Director for SEAVG at the WBG, the SBV Governor acknowledged the efforts of the WBG over the past two years to urgently develop and implement comprehensive solutions to reform the entire organization, in order to meet better the demands of the member countries, as well as to hold a leading position among the development donors in the world.
As the representative of the Government of Vietnam at the IMF/WBG, the Governor informed that the SBV highly appreciates the role of the Southeast Asia Voting Group Office in effectively representing and coordinating the member countries. In addition, the Governor also emphasized the necessity of the close cooperation among the member governments and the international organizations in order to address the global macroeconomic challenges, including the risks of pandemics, natural disasters, and conflicts.
