On October 30, 2024, in Hanoi, First Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Ms. Michaela Baur, Country Director of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Vietnam.

At the meeting, Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu congratulated Ms. Michaela Baur on her appointment as the GIZ’s Country Director for Vietnam, and wished Ms. Michaela Baur a successful working term.
The Deputy Governor expressed his high appreciation for the GIZ’s cooperation and support through various well-performing and practical projects and programs benefiting the SBV in particular and Vietnam in general. With its presence in Vietnam since 1993, the GIZ has supported Vietnam not only in finance and banking, but also for many other sectors. The SBV and the GIZ had developed an effective partnership for the past 31 years. The support of the German Government in general and the GIZ in particular has proven to be practical and always been aligned with the SBV’s political tasks in different periods.
An overview of the meeting
According to the Deputy Governor, the Government and the SBV have identified two key priorities, i.e. green banking-green credit, and the digital transformation-digital technology development. Since 2017, with the support of the GIZ, the SBV has developed several schemes on green banking, and the Action Plans of the banking sector to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as to implement the national strategy on green growth in different periods.
Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu expressed his hope that the German Government and the GIZ would continue to support and cooperate with Vietnam in the areas of economic, finance and banking reforms, in order to help Vietnam to develop a carbon-neutral economy, a circular economy, a green economy, and a digital economy, and to achieve the commitment of “net zero” by 2050; create a premise for Vietnam’s contributions to the regional and global transformation process in order to realize the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, Deputy Governor Tu also proposed that the GIZ continue to support the digital transformation in the banking sector, share its experience in providing safe products and services, and enhancing customers’ experience while still ensuring the security and safety, and protecting the customers’ rights.

Ms. Michaela Baur expressed her sharing with the difficulties Vietnam had experienced recently to overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi. Ms. Michaela Baur also emphasized that the SBV is always one of the most important partners of the GIZ, and expressed her pleasure with the firm cooperative relationship between the two sides over the past time.
According to Ms. Michaela Baur, the information shared by the SBV Deputy Governor was fully aligned with the global trends, which aim to achieve both targets of economic growth and environmental protection. Carbon emission reduction is one of the global challenges, requiring the joint efforts of all countries in the world.
