According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.59% in September 2018 against August 2018, up by 3.98% as compared to that of the same period of 2017 and up by 3.2% as compared to that of December 2017.

Specifically, the prices of ten out of eleven groups of commodities increased as compared to the previous month.
The price index of the education group registered the highest increase of 5.07%, followed by that of the group of traffic which was up by 0.82%; the price index of the group of food and catering services was up by 0.44%; the group of housing and construction materials was up by 0.2%; the price index of the group of other commodities and services increased by 0.14%; the group of household appliances and goods increased by 0.13%; the garment, footwear and hat group was up by 0.11%; the price index of the beverage and cigarette group and the price index of the culture, entertainment and tourism group both increased by 0.09%; the group of medicine and healthcare increased by 0.04% against August 2018.
By the end of September, the postal services is the only group with decreased price index, which was down by 0.08 % as compared to August 2018.
The core inflation in September 2018 increased by 0.14% as compared to that of the previous month, and increased by 1.61% over the same period of 2017. The average core inflation in the first nine months of 2018 was up by 1.41% as compared to that of the same period of 2017.
The gold price index and the US dollar price saw opposite trends in September. The gold price index of September 2018 was down by 0.97% as compared to the previous month, down by 1.89% as compared to December 2017, and down by 3.16% as compared to that of the same period of 2017. The USD appreciated by 0.16% against August 2018, up by 2.57% as compared to that of the same period of 2017, and up by 2.59% in comparison with December 2017.
