On October 6, 2022, in Hanoi, Deputy Governor Doan Thai Son of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Abdul Rahman Ahmad, Group Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Group Holdings Berhad (CIMB).

Also attending the meeting, from the SBV’s side, there were representatives from the International Cooperation Department, the Payment Department, the Banking Supervision Agency. On CIMB’s side, there was Mr. Effendy Shahul Hamid, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Digital Assets; Mr. Thomson Fam Siew Kat, CEO of CIMB Vietnam, and other officers from CIMB Vietnam.

At the meeting, Mr. Abdul Rahman Ahmad, CIMB Group Chief Executive Officer, expressed his sincere thanks to the SBV for having created favorable conditions for and supported CIMB Vietnam since its establishment in 2016. He also briefed the SBV about the operational situation of CIMB Vietnam and the strategy of CIMB for Vietnam regarding the development of digital banking in the coming time. Moreover, he also shared with the SBV officers about the experience and innovations on digital banking that CIMB has implemented effectively in Malaysia, the Philippines,…, and the trends of digital banking in the region. In addition, Mr. Effendy Shahul Hamid also shared that CIMB Vietnam had established partnerships with the e-commerce platforms in Vietnam in order to provide the users with banking services through digital channels.
An overview of the meeting
Welcoming Mr. Abdul Rahman Ahmad and his mission to visit and work with the SBV, Deputy Governor Doan Thai Son emphasized that the SBV made high evaluation for the role of CIMB, one of the leading financial institutions in Malaysia and the whole ASEAN. The SBV Deputy Governor confirmed that the SBV acknowledged the commitments and the positive adjustments of CIMB’s operational orientations in Vietnam.
Moreover, the SBV Deputy Governor shared that, in the currently increasing trend of digital transformation, the SBV, as the State management agency for the banking sector, has always considered the improvement of the legal framework for the digital transformation to be one of the key tasks. Implementing the Government’s policy in the National Digital Transformation Strategy, the SBV had issued a plan on digital transformation of the banking sector, focusing on developing the strategy and the policy orientations of the SBV regarding the improvement of the frameworks for digital transformation and digital banking in Vietnam. This is one of the important tasks to realize the Government's goal of promoting financial inclusion in Vietnam in order to ensure the right to the access of financial and banking services
The SBV Deputy Governor hoped that CIMB, with its extensive experience, would support and share more experience with the SBV functional departments in developing digital banking and promoting the use of digital payment services for Vietnamese customers.
