This was one of the messages conveyed by Mr. Le Anh Dzung, Deputy Director General of the Payment Department of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), at the press conference launching a series of events of Vietnam Bankcard Day 2023 with the theme of “Break your limits”. The conference was jointly organized by the Tien Phong Newspaper, the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS), and the SBV’s Payment Department on September 20, 2023 in Hanoi.
Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Le Anh Dzung, Deputy Director General of the SBV’s Payment Department, said that cashless payment is an inevitable trend around the world, and Vietnam is not an exception of the trend. Vietnam Bankcard Day 2023 is aimed to continue spreading the spirit of innovation and breakthrough based on the digital technology, applying advanced payment technology to make non-cash payment more friendly and familiar to many groups of customers. Also, this event will further contribute to realizing the goals set by the Government in the Scheme on Cashless Payment Promotion in Vietnam for the 2021-2025 Period, and the National Financial Inclusion Strategy.
After two editions in the past, the Vietnam Bankcard Day events have contributed to promoting the habit of cashless payment among young people. With many advantages, bank card payments and applications have been gradually becoming an important part of life.
An overview of the Press Conference
Along with that, the number of bank cards has continuously increased. According to the statistics from the SBV Payment Department, by the end of July 2023, there were more than 103 million domestic cards and 36.7 million international cards in circulation in Vietnam, of which, nearly 10.8 million cards have been opened via eKYC.
Answering the reporters' questions about the communication orientations for the financial education, Ms. Kim Lan Anh, Deputy Director General of the Communications Department, informed that, over the past time, the SBV has proactively developed various contents and made several financial education programs, such as the TV game shows of "Smart Money", "Holding the purse-strings", “Correct Understanding of Money”, a series of events of the “Tomorrow Bankers 2023” Contest, etc., in order to provide instructions and protect users of banking products and services; improve the knowledge and skills for customers in using financial and banking services, especially the skills in making banking transactions on the digital platforms, including non-cash payment means, thereby contributing to promoting the cashless payment and financial inclusion.
In the coming time, the communication and financial education would continue to be implemented synchronously throughout the entire banking system. Accordingly, the substances would closely follow the key tasks of the sector, the directions of the Government and the Prime Minister, including important contents related to the Scheme on Cashless Payment Promotion in Vietnam for the 2021-2025 Period; the digital transformation of the banking sector; the security and safety of the information technology systems, the safety in electronic payments, card payments, the legitimate rights of consumers using banking services, etc.
The Deputy Director General of the Communication Department added that the means of communication would be increasingly diversified, including the application of new technologies and social platforms to widely disseminate financial knowledge, especially to the people in the remote, island and border areas, with the aims of improving the understanding and changing the behavior of the customers, ensuring that it is “easy to remember - easy to understand - easy to disseminate widely”.
Within the framework of Vietnam Bankcard Day 2023, a Seminar on "Promoting card operations and future payment trends" would be organized with the presentations focusing on assessing the card operations in Vietnam’s market, pointing out the existing barriers and possible solutions, identifying future payment trends contributing to building a foundation for the application of new technologies in payment operations. Moreover, a “Song Festival” would take place from October 6 to October 8, 2023. Vietnam Bankcard Day would be held at the Stadium of Hanoi Education University, with the participation of financial institutions, commercial banks, payment intermediaries and hundreds of reputable commercial brands in Vietnam.
